Regal and majestic, an old world breed, Jacob Sheep
are a very ancient domesticated breed.
Documentation throughout history indicates that the
breed probably originated in what is now Syria some
three thousand years ago. Pictorial evidence traces
movements of this breed through North Africa, Sicily,
Spain, and on to England.  Jacob Sheep were
originally imported into the United States for game
parks and zoos around the turn of the century. The
genetic pool was greatly enhanced by additional
importations from Britain during the 50's and 60's.

Aram is the Hebrew name for ancient Syria. After
tending his uncle's flocks for many years and
marrying his two cousins Jacob was compensated for
his work by receiving all the spotted animals as his
wage. He placed spotted branches around the
watering holes to encourage the ewes to conceive
spotted lambs. The story also tells how Jacob had a
dream from God instructing him to use only spotted
rams for breeding. This sound advice created an
almost entirely spotted flock and is probably one of
the oldest documented references to selective animal
breeding.

Handsome and hardy, the Jacob is ideal for the small
flock owner or the large breeder. A small and efficient
breed, more sheep can be maintained per acre. They
are easily handled, rarely need veterinarian
intervention, and show a greater resistance to
foot-related problems and internal parasites. Ewes
lamb easily and the lambs are up and nursing quickly.
Carcasses are lean and flavorful with a minimum of
waste from slaughter to table, while tanned hides and
horn buttons are additionally valued products from
these sheep.
